Small Business Grants for Minorities

Small business grants for minorities are a great way for minority owned businesses to get off the ground or to expand. There are many different organizations that offer these grants to further the interest in a specific field. Many industries are under represented by minority owned businesses so to encourage entry into these fields many trade organizations will offer small business grants for minorities.

Historically minority groups have had less of an opportunity to secure traditional financing for their businesses. This has resulted in these groups being stymied when it comes to starting their business or growing a business they already have. Trade groups or groups that are focused on advancing a minority group offer grants as a way of helping out like minded people to succeed.

Things the Grants Will Cover

Sometimes the guidelines as to what the money can be used for are very strict, it is spelled out very clearly what the money is earmarked for. It can be used for a host of reasons but is typically dictated as to what reason.

In some cases the money can be used to start up a business, or to sustain it through a rough patch. It also may be offered to help a business expand, but be sure that this is free money and the organization that is handing it over will certainly have some control of what happens to it.

The SBA

The Small Business Administration is the agency that the government started to help small businesses succeed. The SBA will guide a small business and help the owner to find small business grants for minorities. In some cases the SBA will be able to offer a grant, but typically funding is very limited. So it is far more likely that they will direct the owner to other groups of organizations that offer these grants.

Where to Find Grants

Finding these grants might take a bit of effort. A great place to start is at the SBA website, there are lists of organizations that will help small businesses some are specifically geared toward the minority owned small business.

Another great place to look is with trade organizations that represent the industry that you are in. Many trade groups will offer small business grants for minorities. Some states have programs that are set up to also further the cause of minority owned businesses and can direct you to organizations or groups in the home state that will offer these types of grants.

A Couple of Tips

Competition is fierce for these grants, so following the application instructions to the T is very important. A well put together application that is complete will be looked at much more seriously than an application that is missing components or that is not filled out correctly.

Make sure that all deadlines for filing for the grant are met; a late application will likely not even be reviewed. Be sure to answer all the questions on the application truthfully, dishonesty even over the simplest question will likely get your application canned.

Small business grants for minorities are available if you know where to look!
